BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — BocaNewsNow.com was first to report that the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an alleged assault on an Florida Atlantic University student that occurred at an area nightclub.
As we reported, the student told investigators that he was punched in the face several times by men he identified as being part of Pi Kappa Alpha. Police say the victim told the fraternity’s president earlier in the day that he was not interested in becoming a ‘brother.’
Florida Atlantic University has now suspended Pi Kappa Alpha. The school issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com this morning:
Statement from Dr. Charles Brown, senior vice president of student affairs at FAU:
(Local Police) are currently investigating an alleged off-campus hazing incident involving the Florida Atlantic University chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha. FAU’s Division of Student Affairs is conducting its own internal investigation and has temporarily suspended the chapter until further notice. Hazing, or any act related to it, is unacceptable, illegal, and will not be tolerated.
FAU values its student organizations, including its Greek organizations, and the great diversity they bring to all of FAU’s campuses and campus life. The university expects all students and student organizations to behave with a high degree of civility, showing a deep respect for each other. FAU does not tolerate hazing by any of its students or student groups. The university provides a number of educational opportunities identifying the harmful effects of such activities. The university will continue to be proactive in its efforts to maintain a safe environment for student life.
Hazing? Punching someone in the face with a fist is Battery, not hazing.
This violent behavior is criminal and should not be tolerated.
When did Oasis become part of FAU? It seems like the University is covering it’s own ass and reaching way past the legal boundary of it’s “power.”
