BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — Hillary Louise Mackenzie, 51, of Aurelia Street in Boca allegedly left her kids at the unoccupied home of her ex-husband. One of the children is severely autistic and needs constant adult supervision.

Mackenzie was arrested and charged with Neglect of A Child.

According to Boca Raton Police, Mackenzie was told by her ex-husband that a serious foot injury would prevent him from caring for his children over the weekend — despite a time sharing agreement. He told police that he feared that his autistic son would need a level of care that he could not provide with an injured foot. He agreed with Mackenzie, according to the report, that he would resume custody Sunday evening.

But police say that Mackenzie delivered the children to her ex-husband’s home anyway on Saturday, used a key to unlock the door and left them inside. The autistic child is “unable to speak, is not toilet trained and requires constant supervision,” according to police. The other child told police that “he was upset and scared so he kept calling his father until he was finally able to get in touch with him.”

She left the children unsupervised.

MacKenzie told police that “she was supposed to watch the boys for the weekend but suffers from panic attacks and that she felt one coming on this afternoon. Mackenzie said that the side effects of her medication is that it makes her sleepy. Mackenzie said that she loaded the boys into her car and drove them to her ex-husband’s townhouse even though she knew that he was not home when she dropped her boys off and left them.”

Police added to the report: “at no time did Mackenzie call 911 for medical or police assistance prior to abandoning the children.”

Mackenzie was released on her own recognizance.
