DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — Hats off to the Delray Beach Police Department which is turning tragedy into triumph by hosting what may very well be the world’s largest swim lesson — ever. The initiative takes the idea of “community policing” to level which very well may generate international attention, but only if you help spread the word.
From Delray Beach PD:
A little over a month ago, the Delray Beach Police Department responded to a home where two young boys had gotten into a neighbor’s pool and unfortunately drowned. The Officers that responded jumped into the pool to save the young boys but it was too late. This event had a profound impact on the Officers and on the Delray Beach Police Department.
Through community partnerships, the Delray Beach Police Department hosted a meeting that brought together various local organizations to collaborate on how to educate the community on Drowning Prevention. Through this collaborative effort, the Delray Beach Police Department has agreed to train Officers to get into the pools in our neighborhoods, with the children in our neighborhoods, to teach children not to fear the water and eventually teach the children to swim. The development of this ongoing program is a result of the community partners coming together to turn tragedy into triumph.
To kick off this initiative, the Delray Beach Police Department, the Delray Beach Fire Department and other various local organizations will partner with Pompey Park Aquatics to participate in The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson. This will take place on Friday, June 20th at the pool located at Pompey Park. All ages are invited to participate. The swim will be a part of a national initiative and will also be considered for the Guinness Book of World Records!
The event will begin promptly at 11am. Participants should arrive early to register! The Delray Beach Police Department will have an Officer from the tragic double drowning available to the media to discuss the impact the drowning had on him. The Delray Beach Police Department will also have Officers in the pool to participate in the initiative!
