Boca's Stand Among Friends Honored In Tallahassee Ceremony

sakBOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — Stand Among Friends (SAF), a non-profit organization that helps college students and adults with disabilities enter the workforce, is among the 2014 Ability Awards winners honored recently at a ceremony held in Tallahassee by The Able Trust.  Stand Among Friends was presented with the Beverly Chapman Award for Outstanding Employment Placement Program.

Each year, The Able Trust honors businesses, organizations and individuals for their employment, leadership and services that allow more citizens with disabilities to enter the workforce.

Shawn Friedkin founded SAF in 1997. A decade later, SAF partnered with Florida Atlantic University (FAU) to open The Disability Center on the Boca Raton campus.  This flagship location has provided SAF the opportunity to assist college students with disabilities who lack resources as they approach graduation and are ready to begin their careers.  In 2012, The Able Trust held a grant competition for Florida organizations working to address the need for professional career placement assistance for individuals with disabilities and SAF was among the winners.  Since that time, SAF has used the grant award to advance its employment placement program, providing services to more than 100 students and placing more than 30 into career track positions within the first two years of the grant.

“SAF’s dedication and commitment to personal service by all the staff is the key to their success,” said Dr. Susanne Homant, president and CEO of The Able Trust.  “Their commitment to helping people with disabilities gain independence and experience makes remarkable difference in the lives they touch.”
