PALM BEACH SCHOOLS: NEW CALENDAR EXTENDS YEAR TO JUNE 18TH

EXPECT 2021-2022 TO START ON TIME, MAKING NEXT SUMMER EXTREMELY SHORT

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — If the Palm Beach County School Board officially moves the first day of school during Wednesday’s meeting to August 31st, it will also move the “last day of school” to June 18th.

That will become the latest “last day of school” in the recent history of the Palm Beach County School District.

Inexplicably, most holidays remain their originally scheduled length. Shortening Thanksgiving break to a few days, reducing winter break to one week (like most of the northeastern school districts), and eliminating teacher work days would absorb much of the impact of the three week late start.

But as the calendar stands now, Thanksgiving break is a full week, Christmas/Winter Break runs 10 days, and Spring break runs six days.

The late start was agreed to in principle last week as a way for the school district to buy time as it prepares for what could be a complete semester of distance learning.

Superintendent Dr. Donald Fennoy and members of the school board have indicated this will be a one-time date change, suggesting that the 2021-2022 school year will start in early August. That could reduce next summer to just seven weeks.
