REMINDER: PAY FOR SCHOOL, CAMP, EVERYTHING WITH A CREDIT CARD

Florida News

WHEN SCHOOLS CLOSE, WHEN CAMPS END EARLY, YOU CAN DISPUTE THE CHARGE. BUT IF YOU PAY CASH, YOU’LL LIKELY NEVER SEE IT AGAIN.

Boca Raton News

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — As BocaNewsNow.com’s continues to be contacted by parents of campers at “Eagles Landing and the Night Owls” who are receiving a runaround but no refund after camp closed early due to COVID-19, we share imperative consumer affairs guidance: always pay for high priced items with a credit card.

The Eagles Landing story is the same story we heard — and continue to hear — from parents who enrolled their children in “early childhood education” at area religious institutions, programs at daycares, pre-schools and more. COVID came. Institutions shut down. Parents received no refunds.

Except some did.

If you pay by credit card, there is always a mechanism in place to “dispute the charge.” American Express has a section of its website dedicated to disputes. Find the charge in question, click the “dispute” button, and Amex will launch an investigation. Visa, Mastercard and Discover all have their own version of this. You may need to call, you may need to send in documentation, but they too have your back.

While a dispute is being investigated, you are off the hook for payment. If you win, you’ll receive a refund or be told you do not have to pay. If you lose, you’ll be responsible for the charge and potentially interest. There are never guarantees, but when the claims are legitimate, credit card companies do tend to side with the consumer.

To Eagles Landing parents: we are aware of emails being sent by the camp’s office suggesting that they’ll get back to parents in several weeks about refunds. We encourage you to initiate your dispute now so it doesn’t “time out.”

We warn you, however: schools and camps now may ask you to sign a document saying you will not initiate a dispute. DON’T SIGN IT. EVER. Cross it out. If the school, camp or other institution wants to deprive you of your legal recourse, you may want to reconsider your relationship with them.
