BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2021 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The Boca Raton woman arrested earlier this week on child neglect and hit and run charges allegedly let a 5 year old in her care drive a Chevy Equinox. A police report obtained by BocaNewsNow.com reveals that the child crashed into bushes and then a minivan, as a witness took photographs which were later turned over to police.
As we first reported, Natallia Kakhniuk is charged with “hit and run,” child neglect, and resisting an officer.
The narrative of the police report — which we have redacted to protect the child — appears below. This is the official language written by Boca Raton Police Officer Kiana Walker who responded to the scene of the crash, and ultimately arrested Kakhniuk on multiple charges.
“On 05/16/2021, I responded to 1361 S Federal Hwy in reference to a hit and run crash. Upon arrival, I met with witness [redacted] who advised she was on the 2nd floor in front of her apartment when she saw a white female juvenile that looked to be about 4-5 years old in the driver’s seat of a white Chevy Equinox.”
“The witness stated she could see the vehicle move forward into the bushes and then reverse several times, so she went downstairs to check on the juvenile. The witness advised when she approached the vehicle, she made contact with a woman later identified as Natallia Kakhniuk. The witness stated Kakhniuk told her the child was in the passenger seat, fine, so she went back upstairs. The witness then took pictures and shortly after, she could see the vehicle reverse at high speed into the parked minivan. The witness stated Kakhniuk then got out of the passenger seat and put the child in the child seat and left the scene of the accident.”
“I viewed all photos and the description of Kakhniuk matched the witnesses’ description given on scene. All pictures and video to this incident were collected and marked for evidence. A (records) check revealed the address of the registered owner to be in the city of Boca Raton, so I responded to I found the vehicle parked in a parking space in front of [redacted] and observed Kakhniuk exiting the vehicle at the driver’s side.”
“I observed rear end damage to the vehicle, consistent with the damage to the minivan. I approached Kakhniuk and asked her about tonight’s events. Kakhniuk stated she was at a friend’s house and she had a crash, but she never mentioned the child in the driver’s seat. Kakhniuk was very short in her answers and very uncooperative. I then advised Kakhniuk that I had concluded my traffic crash investigation and that I was conducting a child neglect investigation.”
“As I was going to arrest Kakhniuk based off of witness statements and physical evidence, [the child] ran out of the house. Kakhniuk then went to take [the child] back into the house but locked the door behind her and did not come back out. Officers on scene waited about 20 minutes for Kakhniuk to come back outside, when she finally returned outside. Kakhniuk cleared the threshold of her home and shut the door behind her and was taken into custody.”
“During the arrest, Kakhniuk pulled away from officers, therefore she is subsequently being charged with Resisting Without Violence along with Child Neglect. At the home, I observed the child who appeared to be about 4-years-old, and later was confirmed to be 4-years-old. She appeared to be in good health and was left with a family member. DCF was notified. Kakhniuk was transported and turned over to Palm Beach County Jail.”
Natallia Kakhniuk was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail at 12:41 Monday morning. She was released at 8:20 Monday night. A court date is pending.
