BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A slightly bizarre and somewhat emotional appeal for information on Facebook is drawing attention to the car theft problem that is plaguing the Boca/Delray community of Lotus, and a special level of drama not often seen over the taking of a vehicle.

Sources tell BocaNewsNow.com that several cars have been stolen from the semi-gated community over the past few weeks. Law enforcement sources tell us it’s more of the same: people leaving their key fobs in their unlocked cars, then expressing shock and dismay when the car is no longer there. The facts of the latest theft remain under investigation.

“People still believe that gates do something,” said the law enforcement source. “They are a deterrent. They are not a cure. These aren’t motes with alligators. These are gates that any seasoned criminal can circumvent with very little effort.”

The latest theft: a BMW X7 from a home on “Dream Falls” in Lotus. It led to this impassioned plea on social media:

A neighbor who lives on Dream Falls in Magnolia needs your help. They had their white BMW X7 stolen last night sometime between 10pm and 7am today. Please, take a moment to stop what you’re doing, no matter where you live, on the off chance your cameras may have picked anything up. Even from earlier in the day yesterday. Having something stolen is such a violation and it would be much appreciated if everyone could take two seconds to review footage to help a neighbor.

The tone of the social media post is leading to incredulous ridicule in reaction sent by many to BocaNewsNow.com. Among the comments we received:

“This was a car,” said one person, “not a priceless heirloom. To say they were ‘violated’ is a stretch.”

“To ask people to stop what they’re doing because the car owner didn’t stop to make sure the car was locked and key fob was in the home is a bit much,” said another.

Lotus is not the only community on Lyons Road between Clint Moore and Atlantic to face a rise in car thefts over recent weeks. Car thefts have been reported in Boca Bridges and Seven Bridges. None of the three communities have “traffic enforcement agreements” in place with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The agreement permits PBSO Deputies to issue traffic citations in gated communities and increases law enforcement presence. There is no charge to HOA’s for the agreement. Patrol Deputies tend to spend time where they can issue citations. Without the agreements, police tend to not “hang out” in gated communities, leaving crime prevention to hourly security guards.
