BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — If you’re heading to Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, or expecting someone who is driving from that area, be advised: I-595 is completed closed in both directions as of 10:15 Monday morning due to a critical crash. A tanker overturned on the highway. Officials have shut down the entire area.
I-595 is the main access point to FLL for travelers reaching the airport from the Florida Turnpike and I-95. While there are permitter roads and other side streets, the vast majority of traffic entering FLL arrives from I-595.
The closure is expected to last for several hours. It was not immediately clear if the tanker was loaded with fuel. If so, a fuel-removal operation will likely have to commence before the tanker can be uprighted and removed. Tankers use I-595 to access the fuel storage areas at Port Everglades.
Until further notice, the best access to and from FLL is U.S. north and south.
UPDATED STATEMENT FROM FHP AT 10:54 a.m:
A vehicle and a loaded gasoline tanker / semi-tractor trailer were traveling westbound on Interstate 595 (SR 862), east of Interstate 95 (SR 9). A sideswipe collision occurred, the tanker veered into the grass median and overturned onto its right side. Personnel is currently offloading 90,000 gallons of Gas into a second trailer. This process will take a couple of hours. There were no reported injuries by either driver. No other traffic involved.
Eastbound/Westbound I-595 closed. The entry to the airport and to Port Everglades is affected. Eastbound is being diverted to Turnpike and I95 Westbound is being diverted to I95 SB. We will be closing Westbound at US1/Port Everglades.
