BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The massive influx of smoke from wildfires in Canada is leading to massive flight delays for flights in and out of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and other Northeast and Mid-Atlantic airports.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, the FAA reports ground stops possible for JFK, while Newark is experiencing an 82 minute average delay for arrivals and departures, LaGuardia is reporting an average 119 minute delay, Philadelphia is showing a 29 minute delays, while other airports are showing varied delays.
Over the afternoon hours, FlightAware.com reports more than 130 delayed flights for New York, 20 for Boston, 27 for DC. The good news: few flights are being canceled. But the low level haze is creating major problems.
Air quality is considered to be as low as possible in New Jersey and New York. The expectation is that the fires will continue to burn for days, keeping New York and nearby areas under extreme air quality alerts.
