BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — As the problem of owners of non-service dogs bringing those dogs into supermarkets, restaurants, and delis continues in Palm Beach County, many readers reached out to BocaNewsNow.com over the past week to praise us for our coverage. Among the writers: owners of “true” service dogs who say the entitled “crazy people” who bring their dogs everywhere should be “fined or jailed” for lying about the status of their dogs.

Even knowing that readers everywhere are documenting the illegal entry of non-service dogs into restaurants, supermarkets, and delis across South Palm Beach County, the problem continued over the past week. The following is a sample of the images we’ve received.

At “The Boys” in Delray Beach, a customer wants to know why this dog is in the restaurant, near exposed food.

Among the “thank you” emails we’ve received in the past week, a reader who truly needs her service dog, and is appalled by rude, ignorant people who bring their “pets” with them wherever they go.

“I have epilepsy and diabetes. I carry my service dog in a bag as it is important she be able to smell my breath for chemical imbalances. I understand that people abuse this but when you are talking about being rude, a store does have the right to ask people if their animal is a service animal.
Costco does this and I am not allowed to put my animal in the cart, so I carry her. Stores have the right and obligation to ask customers this question. If they did there would be fewer problems. And they should call the police. I carry my dogs’ documents with me.”

Another email came from a reader who also has a service dog: “(Palm Beach County) is a cornucopia of a menagerie of zoo animals (handlers included) playing disability service animal routine. There many other abuses of 1972 disability act that sadly even those it is to protect use and abuse to their financial benefit but that’s a whole other discussion. Good luck and glad someone is bringing these issues to light.”

Nothing like going for a walk with your dog in Publix. Except it’s illegal. Publix has the federal law posted at the entrance to its stores.

And a reader who works in a medical field said the number of people who bring their pets — not service animals — into her office is unbelievable.

“I work in an extremely busy doctors, office, and southwest DELRAY, and the amount of “service dogs“ that are brought into our office is beyond ridiculous. You might also want to note that the ADA does not recognize “emotional support dogs“ as an actual service dog. We’ve had people bring dogs in that have jumped up on our furniture, that have snapped or tried to attack other patients in the office, dogs that have had “accidents“ in our office that the owner does not clean up! All of these dogs are not service trained and provide no service whatsoever to the individual. Half the time the dog is allegedly a service dog for the patient’s spouse’!! Who’s not even being seen as a patient that day! The self entitlement of some of these people is just completely obnoxious.”

At Costco in Boca Raton, a reader wants to know what service this tiny dog could possibly provide that makes its presence in the store legal under federal law.
