BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The Boca Raton Police Officer captured on body cam video pulling a non-compliant pregnant woman from her vehicle has retired from the police force.

BocaNewsNow.com has learned that Officer Matthew McNichol retired from the department shortly after the late May incident in the 8800 block of Congress Avenue. Boca PD was called to the scene by a witness who stated the woman and man were in a heated argument while a child was in the car.

McNichol, upon responding to the scene, told the couple that they were in “his city, the City of Boca Raton.” He then ordered the woman out of the car but she refused, demanding that her mother be called to the scene. McNichol threatened to taze the woman but a taser was never deployed. Instead, he ultimately pulled the woman from her vehicle and placed her in custody. The man who was in the vehicle fled the scene — leaving their child unattended — but he returned several moments later saying that he feared for his safety.

The bodycam video led to an investigation into the actions of several Boca Raton police officers. Officer Matthew McNichol resigned following his late May, 2023 incident.

Police Chief Michele Miuccio issued this statement via social media: “There is understandable public concern about the May 22 arrest of a woman after we were called to a domestic disturbance alleged to be taking place in and around a car on Congress Avenue. While the responding officers had a duty to identify the people involved and investigate if a crime took place or anyone was at risk, one of our officer’s actions did not help to de-escalate the situation.

I take our commitment to professional police service seriously and hold that expectation for all of our personnel in all interactions with the community we serve. An internal affairs investigation has been initiated into the officer’s conduct and it will be thoroughly investigated and appropriately addressed based on the outcome of that investigation. I am committed to maintaining trust and transparency with the community of Boca Raton.”

Other officers involved also remain under investigation, although all remain on active duty.
