BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A man allegedly ran a gate at The Oaks in Boca Raton and threatened a homeowner, claiming he had a weapon. The man remains at large. No one was injured.

According to sources providing internal communication from The Oaks to BocaNewsNow.com, the incident happened Monday afternoon at the Oaks which is on the east side of U.S. 441, just north of Clint Moore Road. The suspect apparently ran the community’s double-gated system at the U.S. 441 entrance, tailgating a homeowner who was legally entering the property.

“The intruder then robbed a resident after claiming to be carrying a weapon,” wrote a property manager to homeowners. “We are taking this incident very seriously, and are conducting our own thorough investigation to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to prevent similar incident in the future.”

The incident is the latest on a list of more than 50 incidents reported to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office since April. All of the following incidents have occurred in and around communities between Clint Moore Road and Atlantic Avenue, between Lyons and U.S. 441. That includes The Oaks, Seven Bridges, Boca Bridges, Saturnia Isles, Mizner Country Club, Lotus, and Dakota.

The Oaks, according to sources, has a “traffic enforcement agreement” with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office which was either in the community at the time of the incident, or on the scene within minutes. There’s been a significant uptick in gate-running leading to car thefts and other criminal activity in communities on the U.S. 441 and the Lyons Road Corridor, including Boca Bridges, Seven Bridges, Lotus, and The Bridges. Many of these communities do not have Traffic Enforcement Agreements in place with Palm Beach County, which permits the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to issue traffic tickets in an otherwise “private” community. Traffic Enforcement Agreements tend to lead to an increased police presence which reduces crime.

Crime is on the uptick for sure. I noted that approximately 1/3 of the crimes were embezzlement/fraud. – non violent crime, but a crime. The assaults, robberies and burglaries are the most serious. Armed mobile security patrols are a deterrence. Deputy Sheriffs should try to drive through communities to show the “Flag”. If a person is bent on crime is driving to a community, he/she will probably do something improper on the road coming to the target location. The deputies should do their street enforcement out of the community, not have 5,6,7, patrol cars race to a reported scene of a crime. This gives other potential criminals working in tandem a notice that other areas are now less saturated with police. Also, citizens should stop demonizing the police. If you don’t want to be stopped for speeding, don’t speed. Not signaling is a violation, police in Florida should stop and admonish, warn or ticker violators. Why, because from the smallest cases police get involved in, the more likely a bigger violation or crime will be uncovered.

The more serious crimes are the financial ones because they leave a community bereft of funds to support those desperate enough to commit a crime of survival because they are unable to support themselves in any other way.

Makes me much happier that I am not rich enough to live in one of those communities…….

As someone who frequently delivers to these gated communities, I think I see the problem. These people feel too safe in their neighborhood & they are way too ostentatious. They need to remember that their multi million dollar homes, albeit behind a gate, are still In close proximity to less than desirable, crime ridden areas. The people that tend to live in these gated communities often have very flashy cars, wear flashy jewelry, and tend to have a wealthy look about them. Which I don’t doubt is somewhat on purpose. In these communities, Porsches and Lamborghinis parked out front are not unusual. Police are often scarce behind the gates, and the non-English-speaking security guard would not deter even the stupidest of criminals. The fact that this crime happened because someone was able to follow another car in is proof that gated communities with security are a waste. The ostentatiousness of the homes and the vehicles, along with the fact that it is guard gated, all lead a criminal to see a giant sign that says “money here“. Remove the gates & guards. Treat it like a real neighborhood. Be aware of your surroundings. Work together as neighbors. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of rich people who falsely feel safe inside their bubble.

There are many other country clubs within a 5 mile radius where the incidence of crime is much lower

Blaming the victim is not right. I understand that people who flaunt their wealth present a target. However, it does not justify the criminal act. It’s not wise to flash and show off.

It’s sad that you can not wear nice things or drive luxury cars because you are in fear of thugs and criminals. Law Enforcement recently busted a car theft ring that was operating from Miami to Jupiter. They employed youths to break into gated communities and steal high end cars. They are not “desperate”, they are simply criminals.

The gates at community entrances aren’t just in high end communities. I’ve seen mobile home communities with an electronic gate system. They provide a small layer of security for residents at all economic levels. That being said, people need to be aware of their surroundings and not be complacent. Lock your doors, set your alarms and stay alert in these times of brazen criminals.

I live in an “upper class” community and regardless of my status of cars, homes etc. I am not stupid enough to believe that there is always a way, that if someone wants to get in, they will!

It’s not hard to look up home values. There are apps and the government that state it.

Would’ve been nice if you had listed what Community the incident happened at and not just the address.
