BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Burning air conditioning units at Whispering Pines Elementary School in West Boca Raton led to a building evacuation and a sizable response from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. No staffers or students were injured. BocaNewsNow.com obtained a copy of the message sent to parents Monday afternoon.
“Whispering Pines Elementary School Parents and Guardians, Earlier this afternoon, Palm Beach Fire Rescue responded to smoke on campus. Students and staff safely evacuated Buildings 7, 8, 9, and 10 until fire officials confirmed that the school was clear to re-enter, tracing the issue back to the HVAC system.
We intend to return to our scheduled day; however, many students have been relocated to classrooms that have not been affected by smoke. Emergency responders remained on site to continue to observe, and to ensure all students are not having any difficulty breathing. District maintenance teams will begin repairs to the HVAC system immediately, so there is no distribution to the academic day tomorrow.
I want to assure you that students and staff were safe during this process, and there is still functioning air conditioning throughout the campus.
If you have any questions, please contact the front office. Thank you for your continued support of Whispering Pines Elementary School.”
It was not immediately clear if the HVAC system is now functional. Check back for updates.
