The West Palm Beach police department issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com.

“Friday afternoon, West Palm Beach police detectives confirmed the victim’s identity as Jason Irwin, 55, orginally from Orchard Park, N.Y. His family in New York was distraught after hearing about their loss but did say, “That was just like Jason.”

Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday, West Palm Beach police were called to Currie Park, in the 2400 block of North Flagler Drive after a woman reportedly jumped into the Intracoastal Waterway. Irwin tried to rescue her but went under. The unnamed woman made it out of the water, but Irwin did not surface.

An extensive search by West Palm Beach police and fire department divers, and crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, and a Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office helicopter continued into the early morning
Thursday with no luck.

At 1:06 p.m. Thursday, a 911 caller reported seeing a body in the water near the 2800 block of North Flagler Drive. The body was taken to the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office and identified as Irwin. He had reportedly been down-and-out but was described as someone who was well liked around Currie Park and was always willing to help others.

The woman who initially jumped into the water was taken to the hospital Wednesday night for psychiatric evaluation.”
