BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The controversial bicycle crash that left a herd of bicyclists hospitalized after a woman seemingly plowed into them early Thursday morning was caught on camera — apparently by one of the cyclists.

The video, posted to social media and embedded below, shows a herd of bicyclists riding northbound on A1A around 6:45 Thursday morning as a woman in an SUV is driving south. The video appears to show the woman sliding into oncoming traffic and hitting the bicyclists.

The video confirms that the bicyclists were following Florida law and riding two across on A1A, but it also raises several questions: why were they riding in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, at a time where drivers often struggle to see? Why were they riding on A1A where there is no bicycle lane and safety issues are well known? Were they traveling at the speed of traffic — a requirement under Florida law — or were they moving at a slower pace which could have confused the driver of the oncoming vehicle? We also don’t know if a vehicle behind the bicycles could have attempted to pass the bicyclists, riding into the oncoming lane — leading the SUV driver to attempt to avoid a head-on collision by moving into the bikes.

Florida Highway Patrol Spokerson Lt. Indiana Miranda told BocaNewsNow.com that no charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle.

“As of this time there is no criminal charges filed,” said Lt. Miranda. “This is being handled as a traffic crash investigation.”

Several of the victims were airlifted to Delray Medical Center. It is believed two remain hospitalized Tuesday evening.

  1. The driver that caused this accident broke the law when she crossed the continuous yellow line on that stretch of the road on A1A and hit several bicyclists head on, on the other side of the road causing bodily harm, sending several of cyclists to the hospital, some remain in critical condition. One is a family man, father of three young children. An honest and great man who is now fighting for his life. A family devastated. How is this fair? A person breaks the law driving a KIA SUV, the crime is caught on video, and no charges are filed. There is something wrong here. At a minimum, a ticket for reckless driving should be issued to this driver (who should NOT be driving at this time of the day, or at ANY TIME). POLICE’s job is to enforce the law, so let’s get back to work here fellows. The break on the beach is over and is time for the LAW to work again.

      1. Agreed, this is ridiculous that she isn’t charged with anything, WTF?! How can someone use a thousands of pounds vehicle against human beings and think they’re in the right, this is crazy.

        1. We find it amazing that you believe you know more than Florida Highway Patrol professional investigators. Investigations can take months. Among the elements they’ll look at: were any of the bicyclists under the influence of anything … were the bicyclists moving at an appropriate speed … was there a vehicle behind the biclcysts that could have been distracting to the vehicle driver. It is inappropriate to assume that the vehicle involved was involved in anything more than an accident. If the bicyclists weren’t on the road at 6:45 in the morning, it’s unlikely that they would have been hit.

      2. Yes. Exactly. This video should have been given to FHP, then Gulfstream PD, for review. Law enforcement is incredibly slow to issue a citation, or field suspend a driver’s license, when there is a crash causing bodily harm to cyclist(s). While the driver has likely been released from hospital and is able to rent/use another car and resume life, our fellow cyclists are in critical care and their families are suffering.

      3. The police may be waiting to see if one or more of the injured dies. They are also investigating the accident to determine exactly what charges are appropriate. I am sure the case is not over yet!

      4. Your rush to judgement in this unfortunate accident represents puerile anger. The police are investigating. Why admonish them before learning all the facts and mitigating circumstances.? There is more than ample time if punishment is warranted. Hope the injured recuperate well
