DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — You have to have Chutzpah to steal a phone from the police, at a police station. So it seems that Stephen Chevrette of Florida Boulevard in Delray Beach has both Chutzpah and a criminal charge or two. He is accused of stealing a phone from the police at the Palm Beach County motor pool location in West Palm Beach.

BocaNewsNow.com obtained the report filed after Chevrette was arrested, a short time after being released from an arrest just a day earlier for trespass.

“On Sunday, January 21, 2024 at approximately 2101 hours, 1 was dispatched as a back-up unit to Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office Motor Pool reference a suspicious person called out by the Sergeant on PBSO property. Upon my arrival, Sergeant Cercy (ID 9461), had a white male detained, later identified as Stephen E. Cherette (3/06/1954). Sgt. Cercy informed me that he was parked in the rear of Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Motorpool, located at 3350 Gun Club Rd, West Palm Beach FL, 33406 when he saw a male in white emerge then conceal himself behind storage containers and pallets in an attempt to avoid his view.

The suspect was identified as Chevrette E. Stephen via verbal communication and court paperwork that Stephen had on his person. The entire premise of Motorpool is enclosed with a high locked fence, topped with barbwire, as well as numerous signs indicating no trespass, and a card access electronic gate that can only be opened by PBSO personnel.

Chevrette was found next to a corded phone belonging to PBSO. While performing our investigation, dispatch informed me that a phone station on the premises was continually calling in as faulty. An additional deputy checked the location of the phone and discovered that it had been ripped off of the phone box directly outside the prisoner release door at the main detention center. The phone ripped from the box was the same phone found with Stephen and his belongings when he hid from SGT. Cercy. The approximate cost to replace the phone and labor service (is) approximately 1000 dollars. In addition, both the phone box and phone were broken from being ripped out.

Based on the facts, observations, and evidence, there is probable cause to arrest Chevrette E. Stephen for Burglary (FSS 810.02 (4b)), Theft (812.014(2cl), and Criminal Mischief (806.13(1bl). This case is cleared by arrest.”

Chevrette remains held on $1,000 bond.
