BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A South Palm Beach County woman took to social media Thursday to write about falling for a scam. While we support sharing warnings with others, we have to wonder — as we are sure many of our readers wonder — why someone would post their personal information while writing about falling for a scam.

Wrote the poster on a platform accessible to the general public: “Good morning! I can’t believe I got scammed. They got me after I purchased tickets to an event. At the bottom of the screen there was a green continue button. As soon as I pressed it a few ads started popping up and that’s when I received a big square all over my screen. It said please contact mac support and they had the number to call. It also said your account has been hacked. I couldn’t press anything else to get out of it or anything. Once I called they said I needed to check my accounts to make sure they did not take any funds out. They had me in my trading account trying to buy bitcoin and everything. I kept saying I need to hang up with u and call my bank and that’s when the guy got a little nasty so I hung up. I now know better. I called my bank and trading accounts and everything is ok. They didn’t get anything. Be careful out there.”

We’re not publishing the personal information, but we remind our readers — young and old — that nothing on social media is private. You may think it is. It isn’t. Not even a little bit. And if you post information about being scammed, and include your personal information, odds are pretty good you’re going to get targeted again and again and again.

We also remind our readers that a webpage doesn’t know if you have a virus on your computer, nor does a voice in a call center that sounds like (and likely is) in a country far, far away.

If you see something online that needs the attention of our “nextdoron” feature, just send us a note using any of the contact buttons, above.
