BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Boca Raton-based GMS Bonds is apparently calling area residents who are on the national “do not call” registry, in potential violation of SEC rules and federal telemarketing laws.
BocaNewsNow.com received multiple calls from someone claiming to be an agent with the company. During the call, the agent wanted to sell government bonds that yield a specific percentage. The calls originated from 561-998-6500, which is the local number for GMS Group located at 2600 North Military Trail in Boca Raton.
A telephone call to the company’s headquarters in East Hanover, New Jersey led to a terse reaction from a receptionist who said “the man you need to speak with is not here.” When asked who that person was, she responded with, “if he’s interested in calling you back, you’ll know.”
The Securities and Exchange Commission prohibits cold calls to people on the national “do not call registry,” but GMS is seemingly violating that mandate. The FTC confirms the number called by GMS has been on the “do not call” list since 2010. The SEC shared this information with BocaNewsNow.com:
“Cold Caller must avoid calls to you if you are on the National “Do Not Call” Registry managed by the Federal Trade Commission. Cold callers cannot call you if you are on this registry, unless you are already a customer, you previously gave written permission, or the caller is a family member, friend, or acquaintance. However, even if any of those exceptions applies, you can still stop calls by asking the caller to put your name and telephone number on the firm’s “Do Not Call” list. The FTC also accepts online complaints about unwanted calls from those on the National “Do Not Call” registry.”
