DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — That never ending construction project at the intersection of Lyons Road and Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach was supposed to be done years ago. The last update suggested July-ish. It now seems as if that won’t happen, if you read the latest update from Palm Beach County.

BocaNewsNow.com obtained the document updating what is — and isn’t — being done. We note the amount of work NOT being done.

·       3/6/24 – 3/7/24 Contractors were unable to work due to rain

·       3/8/24 – 3/9/24 MJC mobilized to the NW quadrant of Lyons and Atlantic to prepare the installation of storm drainage pipes and structures. Set barrier walls, pumps, and well-points

·       3/11/24 MJC began excavation to install drainage structure 253 but were having issues with soil caving in so they ordered a trench box. This operation was on hold until the trench box arrived

·       3/12/24 – 3/14/24 MJC mobilized the crew to Farmers Road for water main tie-in per plan while they await trench box arrival. Completed tie-in on 3/14/24

·       3/15/24 The trench box was delivered. MJC mobilized again to the NW quadrant of Lyons and Atlantic to continue drainage installation. Crews were onsite working until 9:30 PM and set the drainage structure

·       3/18/24 – 3/19/24 Crews completed installation of drainage structure 253 and connection to 36-inch storm drain pipes. They then began backfilling and compacting soil around the structure.

·       3/20/24 After weeks of coordination with FPL to de-energize existing overhead power lines, the signal subcontractor mobilized to the northeast quadrant of Lyons and Atlantic to remove the last mast arm foundation but was unsuccessful with the extraction due to the overall size of the buried material

·       3/21/24 Once more, FPL de-energized the overhead lines, and the signal subcontractor mobilized once again to the northeast quadrant of Lyons and Atlantic. They proceeded to dig around the foundation but were unsuccessful with the extraction. They will try again at a later date with a larger crane.

·       3/22/24 No work on site due to heavy rains.

The construction is part of a project that was supposed to take just months when it started several years ago, but due to poor planning, poor contractor management, and very poor oversight, the project — and its problems — continue. The southbound turning lane on Atlantic Avenue for Lyons Road remains closed, creating massive traffic problems, including near daily accidents.

  1. I commend Boca News for publishing and photographing the law breakers. Dogs do not belong in restaurants or food stores. I have a dog and love him very much but leave the dogs at home! It’s not that difficult.

  2. The closed left turn lane from Atlantic to Southbound Lyons should be converted to a dedicated U Turn only lane. This should help those they are shopping at Joseph’s and the other local shops and get them out of the only open left turn lane.
