DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The mess that is Lyons Road in West Delray Beach is going to remain a problem for several more weeks. The Palm Beach County Engineering and Public Works Department issuing a statement to BocaNewsNow.com late Thursday about the ongoing construction at Lyons and Atlantic — construction that’s been part of a mismanaged project that’s been ongoing for two years.

“The current work at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Lyons Road requires a traffic shift and you may have noticed that while driving through that intersection.

Over the past several nights, the contractor has been paving the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Lyons Road. On the morning of May 23rd, the contractor completed the traffic shift for southbound Lyons Road traffic.

In the coming weeks, motorists can expect similar construction activities at the corners, now shifting to the new work zone in the middle of Lyons Road. The contractor will be installing concrete medians, base rock, and asphalt on both the northbound and southbound approaches to Atlantic Avenue. The contractor is still on track for July 2024 completion.”

The Lyons Road work was supposed to be a multi-month project when it started back in 2022. But contractors failed to properly map underground utility lines back in late 2022 which stalled work for months. When the project continued, the County claimed delays obtaining parts — and seemingly managing contractors — led to unexpected delays. The issues have created huge traffic problems on Lyons between Clint Moore and Atlantic — a stretch of road that was never designed for the traffic levels reached once GL Homes built The Bridges, Seven Bridges, Boca Bridges, and Lotus — all adding thousands of vehicles to what was largely a two lane road.

  1. This project is in its 3rd year as of last fall. Two huge construction cranes on Lyons Road sat there for almost 2 years motionless. How does any company or organization have the ability to let equipment like that sit idle that long .
Something about this project stinks to high heaven.

  2. This happens (and does frequently across the US) when you have incompetent people in charge of managing and holding contractors accountable for their work. Like our Federal government, when spending other people’s money, cost and performance take a back seat. And there is always the chance of personal or family ties affecting contract awards. Who you elect has consequences.
