DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A fatal crash in February at Military Trail and Las Verdes Drive in Delray Beach has led to the arrest of a West Palm Beach man. Thomas Lewis, 21, of Russlyn Drive in West Palm turned himself into the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday on an open arrest warrant for vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter. He was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail.

Lewis, driving a Mercedes C250, is accused of slamming into a Toyota RAV 4 driven by German Barreto, 56. Baretto died at the scene. Lewis sustained minor injuries.

”Barreto was operating his Toyota northbound on Military Trail approaching the intersection of Las Verdes Drive in the center lane,” said police investigating the February 4th crash. “Lewis was operating his Mercedes northbound on Military Trail from Linton Blvd., closing on the Toyota from the rear. For unknown reasons, Lewis failed to fully steer away from the Toyota, causing the front right of the Mercedes to impact the left rear of the Toyota.

As the Toyota was impacted, it violently rotated northeast off of the roadway, impacting a standing telephone pole at the intersection of Las Verdes Drive and came to rest. The Mercedes continued northeast for a short time before veering east off the roadway, mounting the curb, traversing the sidewalk and rolling to rest in a grassy area.”
