BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The ongoing worldwide computer crisis seemingly sparked by a security update by Microsoft vendor CloudStrike is hitting South Florida airports hard. Huge numbers of flight cancellations and delays continue to be logged.
As of 5:45 p.m. Friday, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport reports 38 canceled flights and a 114 delayed flights. Miami International Airport reports 58 canceled flights and 376 delayed flights. And Palm Beach International Airport reports 20 canceled flights with 63 delays. Our data is courtesy FlightAware.com.
Nationwide, 9,490 flights have been delayed while 2,717 have been canceled. Worldwide, 38,929 flights have been delayed and 4,335 have been canceled.
Delta, American, United, and other airlines issued ground stops early Friday morning as the global computer outage took hold. American was the first airline to restart flights, followed by JetBlue and Southwest. Delta Airlines resumed flights around 10 a.m. The United Airlines ground stop continued through the morning.
Airlines are warning that delays and ground stops may continue for the next several days as they move into recovery mode — moving planes back to where they need to be, dealing with crews that may have “timed out,” and working with passengers who had to be rerouted after flight disruptions.
