BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Public school for Palm Beach County students starts Monday — and as we report each year, police across the region are preparing to be on location in school zones. If you read no other part of this article, know this: you do not want to be stopped speeding in a school zone.
From the City of Boca Raton to Palm Beach County in general, police will enforce traffic laws on day one. No warnings. No suggestions. Just tickets. Here’s how speeding in a school zone breaks down in Palm Beach County, Florida:
1-9 MPH over the speed limit brings a fine of $156. 10-14 MPH over the speed limit will lead to a fine of $306. 15-19 MPH over the limit brings a fine of $406. If you’re caught speeding 20-29 over the limit in a school zone, expect a fine of $456. If you’re speeding 30 miles per hour over the speed limit in a school zone, we hope you lose your license, but we know you’ll receive a fine of $606. It’s not just fines, however. The points you will receive can easily lead to license suspension. In Florida, speeding is automatically 3 points and potentially more depending on how fast you are driving. If you fail to yield right-of-way to a pedestrian, it’s another 3 points. If you fail to stop for a school bus, you’ll receive 4 points.
Under Florida law, your license will be suspended for 30 days if you receive twelve points within one year. Your license will be suspended for three months if you receive 18 points within 18 months. And you’ll lose your license for one full year if you log 24 points within 36 months. As always, we will attempt to obtain speeder information and publish tickets issued to those drivers who are accused of speeding in school zones on the first days of school.
