BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting Tuesday night in North Broward County. A suspect was injured. The Deputy, according to investigators, is fine. Here’s what the Broward Sheriff’s Office told BocaNewsNow.com mid-day Wednesday. BSO provided this update to BocaNewsNow.com mid-afternoon Wednesday:

“The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) are investigating a non-fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 27 in Pompano Beach. Shortly after 9:30 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications received a call reporting shots fired near the 700 block of Northwest Fifth Avenue in Pompano Beach. BSO district deputies responded.

According to investigators, when deputies arrived at the scene, they encountered a man armed with a semi-automatic rifle. When the deputies began their approach, the suspect shot at the deputies forcing two deputies to discharge their weapons striking him. Deputies immediately began providing medical attention to the suspect.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported. The suspect was identified as 51-year-old Scott Simonelli. He now faces one count of attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer and two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.”

The location is just south of the Pompano Beach Airpark and near a school and a park. It was not immediately known what the suspect is accused of doing. Check back for updates.
