PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The fatal crash that caused the Tuesday morning closure of the Florida Turnpike in Palm Beach County was actually an apparent suicide. A man jumped from the Hypoluxo Bridge, landed on a box truck, then fell to the ground. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The Florida Turnpike southbound was closed for several hours causing huge traffic problems. Northbound lanes were significantly slowed.
The Florida Highway Patrol provided this initial narrative of events to BocaNewsNow.com. We note the investigation continues.
“At approximately 5: 44 am on 09/03/2024 the Florida Highway Patrol received a call for a vehicle crash that had occurred southbound Florida’s Turnpike MM 90 south of State Road 802 (Lake Worth Road). This crash involved one vehicle versus a pedestrian. Vehicle 1, a box truck, was traveling southbound in the outside lane of the Florida’s Turnpike south of State Road 802. For an unknown reason Pedestrian 1, a 17-year-old white Hispanic male, threw himself from the Hypoluxo Road bridge down to the outside lane of the Florida’s Turnpike as it was being occupied by the box truck. The teen landed on the hood of the box truck.
Subsequently, the teen then traveled south onto the inside lane of the Florida’s Turnpike, where he came to final rest. The box truck came to a controlled stop approximately 0.2 miles south of the area of collision, facing south on the right paved shoulder. Upon (the arrival of an FHP Investigator) to the scene, the victim was pronounced deceased on scene at approximately 6:06 am. This is still an ongoing investigation.”
The Turnpike reopened just after 10 a.m., traffic returned to normalcy around 10:45 a.m.
