It was not immediately clear how many people were killed or injured. Motorists are being urged to find an alternate route.
The closure is affecting all southbound lanes north of Lake Worth Road. Traffic camera feeds monitored by BocaNewsNow.com show significant delays that are increasing. Traffic is at a virtual standstill in the area of Lake Worth. The delays are expected to continue well into the morning.
FDOT reports that the crash was first reported around 7 a.m. The first mile marker location was MM 90. That quickly grew on both sides of the turnpike. We understand as of 8:48 that traffic is completed stopped southbound, but also experiencing significant delays northbound.
Your best bet: get off the Florida Turnpike southbound well before Lake Worth — perhaps Okeechobee Blvd which is roughly eight miles to the north of the scene. Check back for updates.
