DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A Delray Beach woman claims that an inattentive, uncaring eye doctor left her blind in one eye by ignoring signs of a worsening medical condition. But the lawsuit against the doctor, just filed in Palm beach County Circuit Court, lists several practitioners who she visited in her quest to solve the medical problem.

The suit, obtained by BocaNewsNow.com, is brought by Delray Beach resident Robin Stanley. She is suing William Martin, MD, and Visual Health and Surgical Center which has several locations across the Broward and Palm Beach County area. In the suit, she makes the following statements:

“On or about August 16, 2022, Plaintiff had cataract surgery of the right eye performed by Dr. Martin. The Plaintiff was exhibiting signs and symptoms of glaucoma prior to her cataract surgery, which were ignored during her treatment at Visual Health. In the weeks and months that followed, Plaintiff, who had a history of glaucoma and elevated intraocular pressures, saw various healthcare professionals at Visual Health who evaluated Plaintiff for blurred vision, floaters, and pain in her right eye. In the ensuing weeks and months, Plaintiff exhibited elevated intraocular pressure, sometimes at dangerous levels. High intraocular pressure increases the risk for glaucoma and permanent vision loss.”

“Despite these issues and clear and obvious signs of progressive glaucoma, nothing was done to evaluate Plaintiff for her worsening condition by the healthcare professionals at Visual Health. Specifically, no visual field or cup to disc ratio was documented on Plaintiff during these follow up visits… By the time Plaintiff was evaluated by the appropriate specialist, she was diagnosed with end stage glaucoma. End stage glaucoma is a serious condition that causes severe visual loss and is often characterized by high intraocular pressure.”

“At the time of her evaluation by the appropriate specialist, the damage to Plaintiff’s optic nerve was irreversible, and further treatment was unsuccessful in salvaging the vision in her right eye. Plaintiff is now legally blind in her right eye.”

The suit seeks unspecified damages. The statutory minimum for filing Palm Beach County Circuit Court is $50,000. Ms. Stanley is represented by Forman Law Offices, P.A. of Delray Beach. We note that Dr. Martin has a clean record with the State of Florida’s medical board. Neither he nor attorneys for Visual Health had responded to the suit through documents processed by the Palm Beach County Clerk of Courts by the afternoon of September 4, 2024.
