BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A significant amount of cash is about to reach the hands of deserving not-for-profit organizations in Broward County. These organizations often play a huge role in reducing crime, whether that’s their mission or not. Here’s what BSO shared with BocaNewsNow.com:

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony and the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office will distribute more than $1.1 million to local not-for-profit organizations through BSO’s Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF) grants award program. The investment demonstrates BSO’s commitment to supporting charitable groups that provide a vast quantity of services to Broward County residents.

The funds, derived from the seizure and forfeiture of contraband used in the commission of a felony, which state law allows law enforcement agencies to use to reinvest into the community, will be dispersed at a big check presentation. The event will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale.

This year, 112 nonprofit projects are being funded through the program. The LETF program allows not-for-profit organizations in good standing with active charitable 501(c)(3) status serving residents in Broward County to apply and receive $10,000 in grant funding.

The winning organizations address LETF statutory requirements such as crime and drug abuse prevention, safe neighborhoods and education, as well as Sheriff Dr. Tony’s priority initiatives, which include diverting youth from the criminal justice system, reducing gun violence, and creating programs that assist the homeless and those experiencing mental illness.

Congratulations in advance to this year’s 2024-2025 LETF recipients! To learn more about LETF and how to apply for future funds, click here or email LETF@sheriff.org.
