BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Nothing says Halloween in South Florida like driving a bunch of kids around in a golf cart so no one has to walk when they go door-to-door, or table-to-table, to get candy. But each year, South Florida awakens on November 1st to find out that friends and neighbors were arrested and charged with DUI on Halloween night, because they were drinking or smoking pot while driving that golf cart.
Local law enforcement is reminding everyone this Halloween that it is illegal to drive a golf cart while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a gated community. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a country club. If you are operating a motor vehicle — that includes golf carts — it is illegal to have an open container or to be under the influence of anything. That includes marijuana.
We also remind readers that many communities in South Florida have “traffic enforcement agreements” with local law enforcement agencies. That means they can issue tickets and effectuate arrests on any road or area in the community for any type of motor vehicle violation. Think you can do whatever you want on your “private” street? Think again. We receive email every year from people who are shocked that they were arrested — or watched a neighbor get arrested — on a “private” street.
Police will be patrolling en masse tonight in marked and unmarked vehicles. Many communities hire deputies and officers for private “details” to help keep kids safe. Those “detail” officers have full power to arrest and ticket.
