BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A man on a bicycle is dead after he apparently rode around gates at a train crossing in North Broward County. The gates were down. The bicyclist rode on to the tracks and was struck and killed. Here are the details provided to BocaNewsNow.com from the Broward Sheriff’s Office:
“According to investigators, at approximately 1:35 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to a train versus bicyclist crash at the 300 block of North Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach. The preliminary on scene investigation revealed a Brightline train was traveling northbound on the east set of railroad tracks along North Dixie Highway. As the train approached the Hammondville Road crossing, the bicyclist maneuvered around the crossing arms and entered the train’s path.
Detectives say the bicyclist was struck by the train, ejected from the bike, and went airborne in a northeastern direction. The dismounted bicyclist then struck a red 2010 Toyota Corolla and became lodged underneath the Corolla. Emergency crews extracted the bicyclist from underneath the car, and he was pronounced deceased on scene.
According to witnesses, the crossing arms and signals were functioning properly at the time of the crash. The investigation continues.”
