UPDATE: The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office issued this statement late Sunday afternoon:
Earlier today, Sunday, November 10, 2024, just after 7:27 am, PBSO deputies were called to Gulfstream Park, located in the 4400 block of North Ocean Boulevard in Boynton Beach, in response to reports of a missing swimmer. The individual, a teenager, was swimming in the ocean with family members when he was unfortunately swept away by a strong current. Efforts to locate and rescue him involved multiple agencies. Sadly, the teen was found unconscious and brought to shore shortly after noon where he was pronounced deceased by fire rescue personnel at 12:31 pm.
Detectives from the Violent Crimes Division arrived on scene to take over the death investigation.
BOYNTON BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A child’s body was recovered from the ocean near the town of Gulf Stream mid-day Sunday, hours after a massive search and rescue effort off the coast of Boynton Beach. BocaNewsNow.com first reported on the search and rescue moments after it began around 7:30. Professional rescue workers from Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue converged on the area of Gulf Stream Park off Ocean Boulevard for the report of people needing help on the water. Boynton Beach Fire Rescue shared these details:
“At approximately 7:20 a.m. this morning, Boynton Beach Fire Rescue received a call for two children in distress in the water near Gulf Stream Park. Upon arrival BBFR found one child had been safely rescued from the water. The second child and their mother remained in the water. A BBFR captain and firefighter entered into the water to assist a Gulf Stream Police Department officer who was attempting to rescue the mother.
BBFR and Gulf Stream PD were able to successfully rescue the mother. During the water rescue the BBFR Captain was injured and transported to a local hospital in severe condition. He is now listed in stable condition. One child was not found. Florida Fish and Wildlife, the U. S. Coast Guard and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office remain on scene.”
UPDATE: We are awaiting an update from Gulf Stream PD about the victim’s age. We were initially told the victim was in his early teens. We’ll add to this report once we hear back. We have also learned that the Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Captain has been released from the hospital and is expected to be fine.
