BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Sweet Potato the dog is looking for a home this holiday season. Maybe it’s your home. Sweet Potato was destined for death after being found emaciated in Broward County. She is now being cared for at Tri County Animal Rescue in Boca Raton.
“Sweet Potato was found in a park in Broward County last Friday walking around heavily breathing. The person who found her thought she was dying and brought her to animal control,” a spokesperson for Tri-County Animal Rescue told BocaNewsNow.com.
“Broward Animal Control does not have the ability to help medical cases and since Sweet Potato had labored breathing due to her neglect and broken rib, which cause pneumothorax — air around the lung not only in the lung — she needed to be placed ASAP or else they would have euthanized her.”
Broward County officials reached out to Tri County Animal Rescue which is based in Boca Raton. The experts at Tri County immediately took Sweet Potato and began nursing her back to health. It’s a slow process, but she’s getting there.
“Bloodwork shows elevated liver values which is probably from the trauma from whatever broke her rib also hurt her liver. Malnutrition is her biggest hurdle as feeding her too fast can do more harm than good so she needs 5 small meals a day to keep her steady. X-rays showed that she had a broken rib and air around her lungs, which is unusual,” said the spokesperson.
“They need to keep her calm and limit her movement. Sweet Potato is now fed small meals throughout the day to make sure she does not make herself sick eating too fast, which could be deadly.”
