BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A man was critically injured Thursday morning while riding a bicycle in the 600 block of West Glades Road. That’s near Butts Road just before the I-95 intersection.
While the Boca Raton Police Department has yet to offer specifics, sources tell BocaNewsNow.com that a vehicle hit the bicyclist who was left on the ground. It was unclear if the striking vehicle remained on the scene. The incident happened just after 7 a.m. Glades Road was closed from the time of the crash until roughly 9:15 this morning.
The victim was transported to Delray Medical Center in critical condition. The nature of his injuries was unclear. Witnesses say they believe he was conscious and communicating with rescuers.
This is the second major bicycle incident in just days in the City of Boca Raton. On Sunday, Felipe Moraes was struck and killed while riding his bicycle on Ocean Boulevard in Boca Raton. The suspect, Thomas Vayianos, is facing a DUI Homicide charge. He had just been released from jail in Broward County on a drug charge when he allegedly slammed into Moraes — a husband and father of two young children. Read our coverage of that incident here.

Sad but who in their right mind would ride a bike in that area??? Yes there are bike lanes BUT ……
Drivers are looking at their phones at all times. How often does a light turn green only to have no one move? It’s the norm now.
We probably need horns – an auditory indicator – on the traffic lights when they turn green.
Apart from killing cyclists, this makes all our traffic worse.
Florida has a toothless law prohibiting texting while driving. But it’s illegal for officers to check if they were texting due to the 14th Amendment.
What we need is a hands-free law like they have in many other states. Then it needs to be enforced with a hefty fine for each violation.
Drivers simply are not looking.
I would never ride a bike where cars are allowed.
I will never understand these bike riders on the main roadway. Why take that risk? Why put your life in the hands of every bad driver?
