Among them: widening of Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach. Just months after that massive construction project on Lyons Road drove thousands of daily motorists bonkers heading north-south, it’s now going to be a challenge to go east-west from 441 to the Florida Turnpike. Here’s the latest from Palm Beach County and the Florida Department of Transportation. We note this is not an all-inclusive list, but a “greatest hits” list of those projects likely to affect the most people:
SR 800/Spanish River Boulevard Over the Intracoastal Waterway (ICWW) Scour Countermeasures Project
Description: This 0.092-mile project on SR 800/Spanish River Boulevard over the Intracoastal Waterway (ICWW) in the City of Boca Raton began January 9, 2024. Work includes Installing Articulated Concrete Block (ACB) at the riverbed to protect the bridge foundations from erosion on the eastbound and westbound SR 800/Spanish River Boulevard bridges. Cost/Completion: $2.1 million/Early 2025 Traffic Impacts:
- The frontage road will have intermittent lane closures, daily as needed, from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, for debris removal activities. Flaggers will be on-site to assist motorists.
- The SR 800/Spanish River Boulevard Bridge will have intermittent lane closures, daily as needed, from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, for material delivery operations. Flaggers will be on-site to assist motorists. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
Marine Impacts:
- Crews will be on-site performing underwater debris removal outside of the navigable channel. No impacts to boaters are anticipated with this activity.
- Divers will be on site daily as needed performing underwater survey work – boaters, please use caution. No impact to the channel is anticipated with this activity.
SR A1A/South Ocean Boulevard Resurfacing Project
Description: This 3.349-mile project in the Town of Highland Beach and the City of Delray Beach began on May 29, 2024. The project improvements consist of milling and resurfacing the existing roadway, widening the roadway in each direction to provide five-foot bicycle lanes, modifying swales to improve drainage, and upgrading signing and pavement markings to meet current standards. Cost/Completion: $8.3 million/Summer 2025 Traffic Impacts:
- One lane in each direction of SR A1A from 3320 S. Ocean Boulevard, Highland Beach, to 4023 S. Ocean Boulevard, Highland Beach, will have intermittent closures between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, to perform milling and paving activities. Flaggers will direct traffic as needed. Access to driveways and businesses will be maintained.
SR 5/US 1 Resurfacing, Restoration, and Rehabilitation Project
Description: Construction on this 1.137-mile resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation project from Bailey Street in Boca Raton to south of Eve Street in Delray Beach began on Friday, December 13, 2024, in Southern Palm Beach County. Work includes milling and repaving the existing roadway to ensure long-term resilience; restriping the roadway to provide 11-foot lanes and 6-foot bike lanes in each direction of SR 5/US 1 within the project limits for motorist and bicyclist safety; restriping the C-15 Canal bridge lanes to provide a 4-foot bike lane in each direction for bicyclist safety; upgrading curb ramps for pedestrian safety; upgrading pedestrian signals at Lindell Boulevard and Tropic Boulevard to new LED countdown signals to enhance pedestrian safety; upgrading the existing streetlights to LED fixtures at the intersections of Lindell Boulevard and Tropic Boulevard for longevity, efficiency, and pedestrian safety; and upgrading signage and pavement markings to enhance motorist safety. Traffic Impact:
- The outside southbound lane of SR 5/ US 1/Federal Highway from Tropic Boulevard to Avenue F will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, for concrete work. Motorists will be able to turn right onto Avenue F from the through lane. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
SR 806/Atlantic Avenue Reconstruction Project
Description: This 2.760-mile project on SR 806/Atlantic Avenue, from west of SR 7/US 441 to just east of SR 91/Florida’s Turnpike, and on SR 7/US 441, from just south of Rio Grande Avenue to just south of Tivoli Island Boulevard in Delray Beach and Boynton Beach is anticipated to begin on January 20, 2025. Work includes widening SR 806/Atlantic Avenue from west of SR 7/US 441 to east of Lyons Road from 2 to 4 lanes and from Lyons Road to east of SR 91/Florida’s Turnpike from 4 to 6 lanes to enhance traffic flow and safety. The SR 7/US 441 and SR 806/Atlantic Avenue intersection will be expanded to accommodate a third northbound and southbound through lane and a second northbound right-turn lane to improve infrastructure resilience, traffic flow, and safety. The Lyons Road and SR 806/Atlantic Avenue intersection will also be expanded to accommodate three eastbound and westbound through lanes, dual left-turn lanes, and single right-turn lanes, further improving traffic flow and safety. The project includes constructing continuous 6-foot sidewalks and 7-foot buffered bike lanes in both directions of SR 806/Atlantic Avenue from SR 7/US 441 to east of Lyons Road, along with an 8-foot sidewalk along the westbound side from east of Lyons Road to west of SR 91/Florida’s Turnpike, to enhance safety and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists. The existing SR 806/Atlantic Avenue bridge over the Lake Worth Drainage District E-1 canal will be reconfigured to accommodate an eastbound sidewalk, providing improved pedestrian access.
The Lake Worth Drainage District L-34 canal will be relocated approximately 60 feet south to accommodate roadway widening and ensure resilient infrastructure with effective water drainage management. Additionally, the Smith Sundy Road and SR 806/Atlantic Avenue intersection will be expanded to align with a future Palm Beach County project, featuring two lanes along Atlantic Avenue in each direction. Throughout the project limits, drainage, signage, lighting, signalization, and pavement markings will be upgraded to enhance infrastructure resilience, traffic flow, and safety. Fiber optic cables will also be installed along the corridor to interconnect traffic signals and improve real-time communication and safety. City of Boynton Beach Sidewalk and Bicycle Lane Improvements Project
Description: This.62-mile project on SR 804/Boynton Beach Boulevard and.7 miles on W Ocean Avenue in the City of Boynton Beach began on May 7, 2024. Work includes milling, resurfacing and reconstructing SR 804/Boynton Beach Boulevard within project limits, expanding the existing sidewalk on the south side of SR 804/Boynton Beach Boulevard to 15 feet and to 9 feet on the north side, performing drainage modifications to accommodate sidewalk expansion on SR 804/Boynton Beach Boulevard, retrofitting pedestrian lighting at signalized intersections on SR/804 Boynton Beach Boulevard, constructing a new pedestrian crossing at NW 3rd Street and SR 804/Boynton Beach Boulevard, installing shared lane bicycle markings (sharrows) in each direction of SR 804/Boynton Beach Boulevard and on West Ocean Avenue, and upgrading pedestrian signals, pavement markings, and signs.
