The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is now reviewing Delray Beach’s investigation into the Brightline Train versus Delray Beach Fire Truck crash from late December.

DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The Delray Beach Police Department has asked the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to review the crash involving a City of Delray Beach fire truck and a Brightline Train. The crash, on December 28th, occurred int he area of SE 1st Street and SE 2nd Avenue on.

As we’ve reported, Delray Beach Fire Truck 115 was responding to a call when witnesses say it drove around activated crossing gates and onto the tracks, only to be struck by an oncoming Brightline train. Fifteen people, including 12 passengers and three firefighters, were injured. The truck was destroyed. The Brightline Train was severely damaged.

While the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what’s been described as “the big picture” to help determine what protocols and procedures need to be in place to prevent a similar incident, the City of Delray Beach had been investigating the crash itself. That changed on Wednesday when PBSO announced it had been asked to investigate the investigation.

“The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division has been requested to review the incident and subsequent findings,” said a spokesperson for PBSO. The agency identified the fire truck driver as David Wyatt. He, along with several other City of Delray Beach employees, were suspended with pay following the crash. The Brightline Engineer is identified as Richard Adkison.
