>> The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday night in Deerfield Beach.
At approximately 9:23 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications received a 911 call about a disturbance involving an armed female who pointed a gun at an individual in the area of 2060 N.E. Second Street. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and made contact with the female, Santrina Lester, who was inside a vehicle. Despite verbal commands from deputies to not do so, Lester produced a firearm. During the encounter, which occurred inside and outside the vehicle, multiple BSO deputies discharged their weapons.
Lester was struck, and deputies on scene began life-saving measures and CPR until Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue arrived. BSFR transported Lester to Broward Health North where she was pronounced deceased. A BSO deputy suffered an injury during the incident and is expected to recover.
A firearm was recovered on scene next to Lester. The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation, and FDLE is the lead investigating agency regarding the shooting. As per BSO policy, the deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation. <<
