BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The City of Boca Raton is set to use what are commonly referred to as ‘red light cameras’ to nab speeders in school zones. City officials made the announcement on Monday — just weeks before the new school year is set to start. Here is the official announcement:

>> The City of Boca Raton will be implementing a new School Zone Safety Program for the upcoming 2025 – 2026 school year and beyond, utilizing state-of-the-art RedSpeed camera technology. This initiative, authorized under House Bill 657, aims to enhance safety for children and staff in school zones by deterring speeding violations during critical times.

Under the program, safety cameras will automatically issue citations to motorists exceeding the school zone speed limit by 10 mph or more during school arrival and dismissal times, indicated by flashing school zone lights. Each citation carries a civil fine of $100, with no processing fee, and does not result in points on the driver’s license or insurance increases.

The decision to implement this program follows extensive traffic studies revealing significant instances of speeding violations within school zones on a daily basis. Similar programs across the country have demonstrated a notable reduction in speeding and increased compliance with posted speed limits, ultimately improving safety where children are present.

“Safety is always our top priority,” said Police Chief Michele Miuccio. “By slowing drivers down in school zones, we’re taking a proactive step to protect students, pedestrians and the rest of our community.”

Mayor Scott Singer echoed that sentiment, stating, “This program reinforces our ongoing commitment to public safety in Boca Raton. As a parent, I understand how important it is to know our students are protected. These cameras are an effective, responsible solution to curb dangerous driving behavior in the areas where our children walk and bike to school.”

The program will roll out in two phases:

  1. And revenue. We had Red Light cameras in Georgia for a while about 15 years ago. Stae changed to timing on the yellow light to 4 seconds and they started disappearing after that. The city has to guarantee a minimum amount to the company that owns them. It was costing to county more so they started taking them out. The speed cameras started a few years ago. people are using the WAZE app to warn them so they are starting to disappear also. It had nothing nto do with safety. If it did the fines would be higher or points would be added or both. It all about the MONEY.

  2. Wow. An actual FAIR and BALANCED way of reducing speeding in specific school zones. No tickets, no points, just a $100 civil fine. And you have those flashing “school zone” lights to remind you to slow down. Boca Raton is acting very professionally. Impressive.

  3. Such nonsense. Cameras that can ID a car but not a driver. No points, no action against the driver, nut the registered owner. If two registered owners, the first named gets the ticket
No stop by police at the scene no real driver accountability. All done in the name of safety for children..
The fines to be split by the camera company and Boca.
How does a conservative legislsture with one of the most conservative governors pass this kind of law. Just follow the money.
