BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — An early morning fire consuming as many as 100 propane tanks on Powerline Road continues to be a problem mid-day. The City of Pompano Beach issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com:

>> At approximately 6:00 a.m., Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to a report of an explosion at the Broward County Hazardous Waste Drop-Off site, located at 2780 N Powerline Road.

Ladder 61 was the first unit to arrive on scene and encountered a large fire involving several hundred propane tanks actively burning and exploding in the facility’s outdoor storage yard. Due to the severity and volatility of the situation, a second aerial apparatus was immediately requested and deployed. Crews established two water sources to support continuous suppression efforts and contain the rapidly spreading fire.

The intense heat and threat of further explosions posed a serious risk to multiple nearby hazardous materials storage units. Firefighters worked quickly to protect these exposures and prevent escalation.

Broward County HazMat responded to assist with atmospheric monitoring and hazardous substance readings on-site. Additionally, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the State Fire Marshal were notified and requested to respond for further investigation and environmental assessment.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

“Our crews faced an extremely dangerous situation with hundreds of pressurized propane tanks involved,” said Fire Chief Pete McGinnis. “Their quick actions and coordinated response helped prevent a much more severe incident.”

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue remains on the scene, working with partner agencies to ensure the area is safe and any environmental hazards are addressed. <<
