WATCH THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING LIVE HERE…

UPDATE: “Save Boca” has submitted a petition with more than 5,000 signatures to block the downtown development project. That should initiate either a City Council freeze on the project, or trigger a municipal election in which all voters in the City of Boca Raton can vote on whether or not the project should mover forward.

According to sources reaching out to BocaNewsNow.com, “Save Boca” expects as many as 500 concerned citizens to pack into the city council meeting at 6500 Congress Avenue when the meeting starts at 6 p.m. The meeting will stream live, below, once it begins. An archive video should remain once the meeting completes.
“The announcement will be significant,” said a source connected with the group. “It comes after we learned that the contractor in business with the City of Boca Raton was accused of involvement with the Champlain Towers collapse in Surfside.”
The company, Terra Group, was named as a defendant in litigation after the tower collapse in 2021. A settlement was reached. No guilt was admitted. Even so, Terra Group is now accused by those opposing the Boca Raton development of withholding information about the company’s involvement in litigation stemming from the collapse that killed nearly 100 people. It was not immediately clear if the planned announcement is related to the Terra Group litigation, or involves a separate matter.
Save Boca is fighting the redevelopment on several fronts and for several reasons. The group claims that the development will yield irreparable environmental harm to the region, arguing that plans show the Banyan Trees that currently adorn the City Hall area will be cut down. A document from the City of Boca Raton, updated Monday, suggests the trees are no longer slated for destruction.
The City of Boca Raton is promoting the 30-acre redevelopment project as a way to enhance and modernize part of Boca Raton’s downtown area through a “private public partnership” that the city claims will generate more than $350M, an amount that it says is “more than enough to cover the cost of constructing the new civic buildings and public infrastructure and amenities, including offsite recreation.”
