BOCA RATON, Fla. – The City of Boca Raton has earned a major recognition for its green initiatives, achieving LEED for Cities Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Unlike the group’s ratings for individual buildings, this award measures sustainability across an entire community. It recognizes the city’s leadership in sustainability, resilience, and providing a high quality of life for its residents.

To earn the gold status, Boca Raton scored 64 out of a possible 110 points in a review that involved nearly all city departments. The LEED framework evaluates performance in key areas like energy, water, waste, transportation, and resilience. City officials say the certification shows Boca Raton is making measurable progress toward its climate goals while maintaining a high quality of life for both residents and businesses.

The city highlighted several initiatives that contributed to the win, including a focused approach on resilience and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Boca Raton particularly shined in the Innovation category, earning a perfect score. This was credited to programs like the ISIP utilities initiative, environmental education efforts, waste reduction strategies, and public art programming.

City leaders praised the certification as both a milestone and a benchmark for future work. “LEED for Cities has allowed us to effectively assess all aspects of sustainability within the City,” said Sustainability Manager Tina Batoh-Jennings. Mayor Scott Singer added that the certification “reflects our longstanding commitment to innovation and smart growth.” Both officials emphasized that the award is part of an ongoing commitment to making Boca Raton a cleaner and safer place to live and work.
