A man claims incompetence at Encore At Boca Raton led to the amputation of his leg.

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A Palm Beach County man is suing multiple area rehabilitation centers and physicians after a series of alleged medical failures led to the amputation of his left leg. Andrew W. Quinn, Sr., filed the comprehensive lawsuit in the 15th Judicial Circuit Court, naming several prominent healthcare entities including The Encore at Boca Raton, Boynton Beach Rehabilitation Center, and several medical groups. The complaint alleges that systemic negligence across multiple facilities resulted in permanent disability.

The legal action centers on Quinn’s residency at The Encore at Boca Raton from late 2016 through June 2023. According to court documents reviewed by BocaNewsNow.com, Quinn entered the facility with a history of multiple sclerosis and prior pressure wounds that had previously healed without issue. However, the lawsuit alleges that during his stay, staff failed to investigate why new ulcers on his left foot were not healing and neglected to address a critical arterial insufficiency that restricted blood flow to his extremities.

The situation reportedly reached a breaking point on June 1, 2023, when Quinn was transferred to Boca Raton Regional Hospital. By that time, gangrene had allegedly spread past his ankle and up his leg, necessitating an emergency amputation above the knee. Quinn’s attorneys argue that the medical team, including several named doctors and wound care specialists, failed to perform necessary vascular tests or coordinate with surgeons in a timeframe that could have saved his limb.  Further allegations suggest that the negligence continued even after the surgery. After being released to Boynton Beach Rehabilitation Center for recovery, Quinn claims he was provided with an unsuitable mattress where he could feel metal struts against his skin.

The lawsuit states that poor wound care and a lack of proper repositioning at the second facility caused Quinn to develop severe Stage 4 pressure ulcers and a new infection in his lower leg, leading to further hospitalizations.  Now confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life, Quinn is demanding a jury trial to hold the facilities and their parent companies accountable. He seeks in excess of $50,000 which is the statutory minimum for filing in Palm Beach County Circuit Court. Read the complete lawsuit, below.
