The City of Delray Beach is continuing with the “learning” phase of its school zone speed cameras.

DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Drivers in Delray Beach can breathe a brief sigh of relief as city officials announced an extension to the warning period for automated school zone speed cameras. While fines were originally scheduled to begin on January 12, the city has paused that rollout and is currently working on a new start date. For now, lead-footed motorists will continue to receive warnings rather than the $100 civil penalties previously expected this month.

The program covers nine public and private schools across the city, including Carver Middle, Pine Grove Elementary, and Village Academy. Officials are reminding residents that while the cameras are automated, they follow specific rules: flashing lights at public schools indicate a 20 mph limit during arrival and dismissal, but the cameras remain active throughout the entire school day based on the regular posted speed limit. The cameras are programmed to catch anyone traveling more than 10 mph over the limit, though they do remain dark during evenings, weekends, and school holidays.

City officials emphasized that the primary goal of the delay and the program itself is safety for students, parents, and staff rather than revenue. When the “live” enforcement officially begins, violators will face a $100 fine, though these are classified as civil penalties. This means that while the fine must be paid, no points will be added to a driver’s license. Signs are already posted at all monitored locations to ensure drivers are aware they are entering a camera-enforced zone.

The city has promised to notify the public as soon as a firm date for the end of the warning period is established. Until then, the grace period continues at all monitored sites, including Trinity Delray, Plumosa School of the Arts, Banyan Creek Elementary, Mount Olive Christian, St. Vincent Ferrer, and Daughter of Zion Junior Academy. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and maintain safe speeds regardless of the enforcement status to protect the local school communities.
