BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The City of Boca Raton needs — and deserves — the best police headquarters possible. With that undeniable fact, BocaNewsNow.com strongly encourages City of Boca Raton residents to vote YES to referendum question #1 next week.
We tend to stay away from political arguments, but this one is too important to ignore. While we may take issue with certain aspects of Boca Raton Police Department command decisions and the agency’s process for dissemination of public information, we are completely on board with this: police need the best. They need the best building. The best equipment. The best room for growth. The best ability to plan for future policing that we can’t even imagine in 2026.
And that’s the key. The current Boca Raton Police Department building was built back in the 1980s. Boca’s population was half of what it is now. DNA was barely a thing, facial recognition was something out of science fiction movies, and the idea that you could see what’s happening at your front door from 5,000 miles away — on on phone you’d keep in your pocket — wasn’t fathomable. Searching a database took hours if not days. Verifying a drivers license would require a cop calling it in to a teletype operator. And to the extent that there was computer crime, it almost certainly involved physically stealing a computer. Now, research takes place in seconds. Computer crime is a major part of modern-day law enforcement.
There’s no way to know what policing — or anything — will look like 40 years from now. But here’s what we do know: The City of Boca Raton needs the best and deserves the best because it is the best. We are not weighing in on the larger downtown development plan (for now), but we do strongly support a new police headquarters that gives our law enforcement professionals everything they need to safely do the job they want to do. We think you should support Referendum Question #1 as well. Vote YES on Tuesday.
