A man responsible for killing a pedestrian in Boca Raton is going to prison.

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A Port St. Lucie man is headed to state prison following a 2024 hit-and-run crash in Boca Raton that left a pedestrian dead.

Carlos Madeira Cardoso, 41, was just sentenced after pleading guilty to charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. The original incident occurred in the early morning hours of April 6, 2024, at the intersection of State Road 7 and Sandalfoot Boulevard.

The victim, identified as 65-year-old Martin Albert Barry of Boca Raton, was struck at approximately 4:10 a.m.. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Barry was rushed to an area hospital but was pronounced dead less than two hours later. Investigators determined that Cardoso was behind the wheel of a 2011 GMC Acadia at the time of the fatal collision.

Cardoso just entered a guilty plea. For the primary charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, Cardoso received a seven-year prison sentence, which includes a four-year minimum mandatory term. He was also sentenced to five years for the tampering charge, which will be served concurrently with the longer sentence.

Beyond the prison time, the sentencing includes several conditions to be met upon his eventual release. The judge ordered that Cardoso’s driver’s license be suspended or revoked for a period of three years. He will later be ordered to be restitution in an amount to be determined by a judge.
