Major Slowdown On Florida Turnpike In Delray Beach, Find Alternate Route

LYONS ROAD ALSO BACKED UP…

The scene on the Florida Turnpike at Atlantic Avenue. You are looking north with southbound traffic to the left of the image. (FDOT).

UPDATE at 4:46 p.m. — This seems to be a mix of construction (yay FDOT!) and the crash we referenced, below. The traffic is bad. Really bad.

DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The Southbound Florida Turnpike is experiencing a massive slowdown in the area of Atlantic Avenue as of 4:30 p.m. on Friday. This isn’t a typical slowdown — this is miles and miles of extremely slow-moving traffic. FDOT says the delay will add at least 90 minutes to a trip between PBI and FLL.

We’re unclear what is leading to the problem. There was an accident several hours ago with largely minor injuries. It did involve several vehicles north of Glades Road but it was cleared a short time after it happened. There is no emergency scene. While a few cars are on the shoulder, it doesn’t seem like this should be enough to cause a significant problem.

Be that as it may, it seems hundreds of motorists are trying to get off at Atlantic Avenue and use Lyons Road as a shortcut. Unfortunately, Lyons is now all backed up between south of Atlantic and Glades Road — where it seems many believed they’d be able to get back onto the Turnpike.

We’ll continue to monitor FDOT cameras and update if there’s anything significant to report. Assume, however, it’s going to take you a very long time to get from Delray to south of Boca Raton if you are using the Florida Turnpike.
