BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The teen struck by a Tesla early Monday morning near Cooper City High School has died. The Broward Sheriff’s Office issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com late Tuesday afternoon:

The teen riding an electric scooter who was involved in a crash with a car on Monday morning in Cooper City has died.

“Just after 8 a.m. on Monday, March 18, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of the traffic crash in the 9800 block of Stirling Road. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded. On scene, deputies located an injured juvenile male, Anthony Malec. According to detectives, the preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of a 2022 Tesla Model X was traveling eastbound on Stirling Road when the teen, on a standup electric scooter, entered the roadway and began to cross Stirling Road northbound diagonally. The teen rode into the path of the Tesla and was struck.

Malec was not in a designated crosswalk as he crossed Stirling Road.

Paramedics transported Malec to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, and doctors pronounced him deceased on Tuesday morning.

The driver of the Tesla remained on scene. Neither excessive speed nor impairment are believed to be factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.”
