BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — More than 600 flights are canceled as of 5 a.m. Friday, banks are facing operational issues, and major companies are unable to function after a major computer problem targeting Microsoft systems overnight.

The problem apparently was instigated by an update performed by CrowdStrike, a computer security firm that provides cloud security for Microsoft. Microsoft users world wide are reporting the “blue screen of death” when they have attempted to login to computers. Some broadcasters have been knocked off the air.

In South Florida, the impact is increasingly being felt as the day begins. Area airports, including Palm Beach International, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, and Miami International are all report flights issues — with some airlines reporting mass cancelations and delays. Delta, Spirit, and JetBlue top the early morning list logged by flight tracking site FlightAware.com.

It was not immediately clear what businesses, banks, schools, or camps might be affected in South Florida. Many run on Microsoft-backed systems and may have significant issues as the day begins.

The outage tracking site DownDetector.com reports as of 5 a.m. that some systems may be returning to normalcy. On the list of affected companies: Microsoft, the Microsoft365 service, Amazon, Reddit, AT&T, XFinity, TMobile, Delta, FanDuel, X, VISA, Verizon, Chase, American Airlines, Google, ADT, and more.
