BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The Coconut Creek Police Department says scammers are pretending to be police officers, sergeants, even the Chief. They are calling people to obtain personal information, then potentially using that information to raid bank accounts, make unauthorized credit card charges, and more.

The scammers have even cloned the Coconut Creek Police Department’s “Real Time Crime Center. That number appears on the caller ID of victims who are led to believe it’s really the police calling.

“We of course would never call and ask for personal info or money,” said Coconut Creek Public Information Officer Scotty Leamon. “The bad guys also cloned the phone number from our Real Time Crime Center, 954-973-6700, to make it look like a legit phone call on Caller ID. It’s not”

The situation in Coconut Creek is similar to scams reported across Palm Beach County and Broward County. Quite simply: police do not call people to ask for money, credit cards, gift cards, or Bitcoin. If you believe you’re being scammed by fake police, hang up the phone and call the non-emergency number of the police department that the caller claims to work for.
