BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — It’s four years in prison for the driver of a 2022 Chevrolet Malibu who struck and killed a Boca Raton man back in April of 2023. The high-profile incident occurred in the early morning hours of April 29, 2023 in the 7400 block of SW 18th Street in Boca Raton. The victim, Longuinho Amaral Junior died on May 1, 2023.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office arrested Samuel Carvalho Vasconcellos and charged him with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. He was adjudicated guilty and sentenced days ago. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the sentencing to BocaNewsNow.com.
Vasconcellos will spend four years in state prison, five years on probation, one year on community control, and must complete 100 hours of community service. His license will be suspended for three years, and he must not possess or consume alcohol or drugs without a prescription.
Defense Attorney Guy Fronstin issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com about his client, Samuel Vasconcellos: “My client Sam Vasconcellos is extremely remorseful for causing the accident that took Mr. Longuinho Amaral Junior’s life. Sam admitted guilt and accepted responsibility and prays that the family finds comfort in knowing that he stayed by Longuinho’s side until others arrived on scene so that Longuinho was not alone when he died.”
There were several questions asked following the incident concerning whether the bicyclist was riding in a safe manner, had lights or reflectors on his vehicle, was visible in traffic in the pre-dawn hours, or was using his phone at the time of the incident. Read our original coverage here.
